Sound familiar?
Thousands of expat families across Portugal are asking the same question: is there a better way?
01
The best British schools in Cascais, Lisbon and the Algarve have long waiting lists and capped year groups. A top-quality British education shouldn't depend on whether a seat happens to open up at the right moment.
02
Even in a strong international school, a bright, curious child can spend years without being truly seen. Personalised learning is a promise rarely kept when one teacher faces thirty pupils.
03
Whether your next move is across Portugal or back to the UK, keeping your child on one rigorous British curriculum — with full continuity — has meant changing schools and leaving friends behind. Until now.
04
Training schedules don't fit school timetables. For young athletes and performers chasing national goals, a flexible, accredited online school is no longer a compromise — it's the strategic choice.
05
High-stakes exam years demand focused, expert teaching. Your child deserves a specialist teacher who knows exactly where they are and what they need next — and the option to sit IGCSEs and A-Levels from home.
06
You've toured the campuses and compared the prospectuses — and either none quite fits, or the fees climb every year. Perhaps an accredited British school, delivered online with small classes and master teachers, is exactly what you've been looking for.
“
“What if your child could have the rigour of a top independent school, in an environment built entirely around their potential?”
The Sophia Difference
01
With a strict maximum of 6–8 students in core subjects, no child hides at the back. Our teachers see exactly where your child is in their work — live, during every lesson. Small class sizes aren't a feature; they're the foundation of everything we do.
02
Every core lesson is taught live by a specialist teacher. We maintain a cameras-on policy because real learning happens through connection and active participation. Lessons are recorded and saved in each student's Digital Notebook for review at any time.
03
Our teachers are highly experienced subject specialists — many are former Heads of Department or practising examiners for Pearson Edexcel. They use interactive digital tools to see live exactly where each student is and how to move them forward.
04
Every student begins the day with their form tutor in Holistic Horizons — a structured PSHE session. Secondary students are also assigned a weekly mentor. Wellbeing isn't an afterthought; it's a daily commitment at Sophia.
05
Core academic lessons run Monday–Thursday, on the full UK timetable, which in Portugal runs in your own time zone. Fridays are dedicated to our celebrated Enrichment programme — App Development, DJ-ing, British Sign Language, Debate Club and more. All lessons are recorded for athletes and families on the move.
06
Parents are invited as guardians in our secure Google Classrooms — full visibility of Digital Notebooks and lesson recordings at all times. Weekly or bi-weekly progress meetings, a parent dashboard, and a dedicated Lead for Student Success keep you entirely in the loop.

More than homeschooling: an independent school at home.
Many families come to Sophia after trying homeschooling or home education and finding it isolating, unstructured, or simply too much to carry alone. Sophia is different: a full, accredited British school your child attends from home — not a pile of worksheets and curriculum PDFs. Live daily lessons, a real form tutor, specialist teachers and a complete British curriculum, with full parent visibility throughout. It’s home schooling with the rigour, routine and pastoral care of an independent school — and a community of children learning alongside yours.
— A structured home education timetable: live lessons Monday to Thursday, enrichment Fridays
— Real teachers, not self-study: every lesson taught live, cameras on
— A home-school community: small classes of up to 8, so no child learns alone
— Accredited home schooling: DfE-registered, with Pearson Edexcel exams sat from home
What Families Say
Our child is very well supported by the academic and pastoral staff, and has really enjoyed the enrichment activities on Fridays. The tutors are wonderfully flexible, and our child has thrived this year. I would wholeheartedly recommend Sophia High School.
Year 12 family · Joined September 2025
Sophia provided exceptional support from the day he joined — a patient, tailored approach built entirely around his needs. Within two weeks his enthusiasm for learning had returned, and he became noticeably happier, more engaged, and eager to talk about his subjects.
Secondary · 18 months at Sophia
Ever since joining Sophia, I have been supported and guided through my educational journey. Teachers and students create such a kind and welcoming environment, and learning is presented in a unique way through an online setting. For me, Sophia has always been a place of positivity and care.

Common Questions
Every core lesson at Sophia is taught live by a qualified specialist teacher. We do not use pre-recorded content for core teaching. Lessons are recorded and stored in each student’s Digital Notebook so they can review material at any time — but the teaching itself always happens live, in real time, with a real teacher who knows your child.
Our commitment to a maximum of 6–8 students in core subject classes is non-negotiable. When a learning pod reaches capacity, we form a new group with a new teacher. This is central to our model and is never compromised. It is precisely why places at Sophia are strictly limited at any given time.
Yes. Sophia High School is a full-time British independent online school, accredited by the UK Department for Education (DfE). We are a member of COBIS and ISA, and a Pearson Edexcel Accredited Virtual Centre. All safer recruiting checks are identical to those carried out by physical independent schools.
Yes. As a Pearson Edexcel Accredited Virtual Centre, we offer Remote Invigilation for IGCSEs and International A-Levels. Your child can sit their examinations from home under secure remote supervision. Exams can also be taken at an approved examination centre if preferred. An additional examination fee applies.
Sophia is a full-time, DfE-accredited British online school — not a homeschooling curriculum you deliver yourself. Your child is enrolled in a real school with live daily lessons, qualified specialist teachers, a form tutor and pastoral care, all from home. It gives home-educating families the structure, accreditation and community that DIY homeschooling can’t.
Core lessons run Monday to Thursday within an 8am–4pm UK time window, with built-in breaks and independent study time. Fridays are dedicated to our Enrichment programme. All live lessons are recorded, making Sophia a genuinely flexible education option for elite athletes, families in different time zones, and students with individual scheduling needs.
Our small class sizes are inherently more supportive for students with additional needs. Teachers use visual learning cues, adaptive digital tools, and real-time Digital Notebook feedback to personalise every lesson. We work closely with families before enrolment to map individual learning profiles. We also offer dedicated English language support for students where English is an additional language.
Absolutely — and this is one of the reasons many sports academy families choose us. We offer amended timetables for elite athletes and performers, ensuring academic rigour is never sacrificed for sporting ambition. Recorded lessons mean that even when a training session clashes, no learning is missed. A number of our current students compete at national and international level.
